Round brick buildings at Dover. Random question.

When leaving Dover towards Folkestone there are about 6 or more small round brick buildings on the grass hill to the left of the road near a place called Samphire Hoe. Anyone know what they are or were used for I`ve googled it but can`t find any info.

Like chrisvs says they ventilation shafts for the railway tunnel. They were used also used for removing the spoil when the tunnel was built. If you come Dover up the A2 toward Canterbury and you look to the right there is at least one on that side that you can see. They are dotted all over the country where railway tunnels were built. They were built in the days of steam locos to let the smoke escape.
