Really want to do work in part time. Don't even care If I'm payed as long as I'm near cars even if I'm just sorting papers.

    Hi Froggy,
    Great attitude indeed!
Modern apprenticeship sounds up your street, thats what I did (old skool apprentice), machining parts for concrete vibrators!
My mistake was not going into cars from day ONE.
Most of my mates got into the car trade and never looked back.
Speed shop stuff is wonderful but hard to find methinks?
My mates machine shop, come speed shop in Maidstone shut down last year. (hard times for some)
Never hurts to get some local names and show up in person.
Thats how I got work myself in the Motor trade.

Good luck and stay keen, you got 50 years of grafting to do before retirement, lol...
    jon @ mopower

I asked a guy once if I could help him fix up American cars and he let me play with these 69 Dodge Daytona's!
    Those were the days...

    Apprenticeship

there are no age restrictions. Anyone over the age of 16 can apply.

you can find the vacancies on the BT apprenticeship website: Apprenticeships and Amit there is not an internal referral scheme running for the apprenticeships. We receive thousands of applications so there is no need to run such a scheme.

We have filled quite a few of the vacancies already. The locations where we really need people now are Enfield, Exeter all the Scottish locations, Swindon, Oxford, Norwich, Taunton, Leicester, Luton, Shrewsbury and Exeter.

Keep on trying and don't get put off be knock-backs. I moved from an island state to big island and knew no one. Checked what was being done in local area, rolled up and offered to work for free. Took some convincing but he said yes, then Monday early in morning he rings and says he's changed his mind, no work for me there. Pressed on to a few more suburbs and landed a gig in a Rod Shop doing rust & RWC stuff. That lead me to cleaning in a 4 bay Shell workshop where they ended up putting me on full time as a mechanic and I got a trade cert at 35! Just keep knocking on those doors.

    Good luck

Don't overlook the local Tech College either(If you have them over there). When I left School with average grades I couldn't get straight into a job. Seems the guys who payed attention in class got jobs. So I enrolled into a Pre-Vocational course at the local Tech. I chose Panel Beating & Spray Painting. Back then panels were still repaired, so I learnt how to weld with oxy and MIG. How to form patch panels etc, etc. The paint side taught us the lot from stripping, prep and application to blending and pin stripe. It was a 9 month course that replaced the 1st year in an apprenticeship, if I had obtained 1. It has served me well, I have painted many cars for myself and others, even got me a job @ the local servo where we would tidy up "Cheapies" and sell again. Don't sit back waiting for it to come to you, get out and make your own good luck.

    Cheers

    Good Lad !

Might be worth stopping in at any main dealers near you, get your foot in the door somewhere , get your city & guilds and then specialize.
I did ten years at main VW dealer in Milton Keynes, messed with my own stuff out of hours. Now I'm lucky enough to build custom bikes for a living. ( took twenty years tho! )
A decent attitude, punctuality and smart appearance go a long way on first impressions.

    good luck
