Storing an engine for long periods

If its in the car,run it to operating temp and slowly pour some ATF down the carb.As soon as you see white smoke out the exhaust turn the engine off. Your cylinders and valves are now lubed for lengthy storage. Good to go.
    There's no replacement for displacement.

What the hell?? Really? Run ATF into your engine?? Are you mad?

Why not just store it under a big plastic sheet, on a wooden pallet (so off the floor and kept dry) in a garage?

What about valve spring crush? engine needs to be turned regularly or the rockers need to be unwound to relieve the spring tension.
Otherwise, just pour some oil down the plug holes and loosely put the plugs back.

Before restarting take the rockers off and pour oil over all the valvetrain, bring pump pressure up with a drill & tool down the dizzy drive and re start.

    Just my humble opinion.

& when yer ready for fire up tear the motor down to unsieze rings/lands , ATF will varnish well below cylinder temps.

change the oil before lay up !!! old oil contains acid and eats metal . take a look at feeler gauges that have been used on petrol engine, they get etched with the acid

Yes.I meant to add fresh oil in my post. Well a very reputable engine builder in California told me that.

I agree with all the points made by Blackpopracing. I have a few in long term storage and I make a point of re-oiling the bores with an oil can and heavy engine oil from time to time and give them a few turns by hand [or even spin them over with the plugs out and a starter and jump leads to get the oil round them]. never had a problem with valve springs.

i always refresh the oil and filter for a long layup and remove the plugs and spray loads of wd40 down the bores and replace the plugs. its also very important to turn the engine over pperiodically to keep every thing free. thats what i do anyway.
