I had a guy stiff me for an engine & gearbox rebuild. Proper invoice etc paid to my old business.
He paid by cheque which (Yes, you guessed it) was drawn on the 'Royal Bank of Harlem' and bounced higher than a fat bloke on a trampoline.
I tried to call him, even visited his address (which he'd moved on from).
Went to small claims and filed the case, but as they couldn't serve the summons they left it to me.
I eventually found his parents' address and served the notice.
Guy turned up to court, and despite the fact that I had a correct invoice and a bounced cheque in my hand I had to pay for an independent report on his car.
So. report shown in my favour. Court orders guy to pay, but he says he has no cash and can only afford a fiver a week.
    Court accepts his claim.
Guy never pays a penny, and when I went back to the court to inform them of it, they say that it's down to me to collect the payment.
The whole point of the case was that I couldn't collect any payment from the guy in the first place.

I ended up not being paid for the invoice (down a few grand), court fees, independent report fees, loss of income when I was trying to track the guy down.
Needless to say, next time someone doesn't pay me I'm taking a baseball bat round!

It goes back to, "Until you pay in full, the car stays here".

Exactly, I always thought that was one big advantage that being a SE mechanic had over a SE builder.

Yes. This was a regular customer who 'paid in full' by cheque.
He'd never been a problem before, but I certainly learned my lesson.
