Rest of the world got wise - huge UK purchase taxes stopped - export subsidies stopped - USA and colonies bought locally manufactured cars as fuel costs reduced - british financiers didn't have the 'bottle' to invest in 'new' technology. The demise of the motorcycle industry showed the way things were going to go. We won the battle but Japan and Germany 'won' the economic war :****er:

It was the unions that killed our industries and like rosco rightly says nobody had the balls or the foresight to invest in new modern machinery and techniques and we just got left by the wayside .

I was watching a program on BBC4 a few nights ago "The Men That Built The Liners" ,had me in tears almost. In the post war boom years they were still using the original plant and machinery that was installed at the turn of the century , there was an old boy on there whose family owned one of the big shipyards on the Clyde and he said when they wanted to buy a brand new efficient modern machine that could be operated by 2 men instead of 15 the union wouldn't let them , only if they had 7 men operating it :****er:

Looking at it from the 'other side' - if you were a worker at these yards you wouldn't just let your job go like that would you? - now if that was 2009 and you had stepped up the tree a bit in terms of position - say working for one of the 'old boy network' companies you would only be too pleased to take a redundancy or severance payout of several times your annual salary wouldn't you Its a class thing - the exulted few from the privileged or old school network versus the great unwashed 'cannon fodder' - nothing ever changes except for the names !
