another one for Si I guess !
can I host my own server with a standard BT braodband connection ?
yes, I know about bandwidth n all that.... or is it something I need to check with BT ?
I have spare linux boxes I can make up, and apache server software mysql etc are all free

whats the catch with the likes of 110mb.com and similar where you get free space / bandwidth / web site - shopping cart builders ... all for free !???

Most ISP's don't like it. They're not too fussed about small servers (I.e. testing situations) but a lot do have clauses saying you can't. This is mainly because people running home servers aren't likely to secure/harden them and as such the ISP's network could end up being used maliciously as relay hosts or running botnets or the like.
The big ones used to be that they wouldn't allow you to run your own mail servers (generally they're easy to hack and abuse).
The other issue is that upload (serving) speeds tend to be quite poor so with a few visitors your site will become pathetically slow.
It's a pointless thing to do really when you can get plenty of hosting to cover it from around £20 per year or free in some cases.
I've never spent much time looking into the free hosts. They tend to cover costs by putting ads on your pages (some don't) but are usually oversubscribed boxes anyway. With free, you've often got the level of service and reliability that't you'd expect to have for something you don't pay for![]()
Meep Meep.
