Thanks for the advice, gratly appreciated, are the steering joints different as well, or is it just the pitman arm? I thought that it was just the arm that was changed, cheers.....Nige

On inspection the shaft going into the box moves backwards & forwards (it shouldn't) & now the steering wheel takes 2 1/2 turns before the wheels move.(whilst still making terrible noises) Something's collapsed inside the box . I'm just glad it happened at home rather than out on the road at high speed other wise I might be toast, as I was looking to put in some top speed runs on my local "test track" , cheers....Nige

I know exactly what's wrong with that ...it's cattled ! Mine on the POS decided to do that halfway round a roundabout . The bearings on the peg had come lose after another component had failed .

We used to use company in Newbury called Gilson Engineering for reconditioning steering boxes, manual and power , and power steering rams, always worth a try for rare boxes.

Would have to check in my 'emporium' but on one the pitman arm has the joint pressed in and the other has the joint pressed into the steering arm, don't think you can just swap pitman arms as the splines are different between manual and p/s boxes.
This at least is what I found out when swapping from power to manual on a '69 bird, ended up having to change hell'n all.
