    Car Tax Increase

I've just read in the Mail on Sunday that the Government will bring in big rises to car tax in April. Has anybody heard about this ?

Tax is always used as a nudger. Nobody will argue because whilst most of us drive petrol or diesel vehicles, we all wear sackcloth and ashes and hang our heads in shame for driving them post-Greta. Well, some of us.

Don't read the Mail. It doesn't convey the facts but provides fear.

Does the article refer to Insurance Premium Tax rather than Road Fund Licence?

Yes, applies to cars newly registered after April 1st I believe.

Your post prompts a question - if you do not believe what you read in the Mail on Sunday (I'm not saying you should, mind..) why do you buy it?

Are you sure this isn't the tax liability for company cars as a 'benefit in kind', rather than the vehicle excise duty?

I Googled this and it's possibly a combination of all three: probably higher VED on petrol/diesel cars; reduced or nil company car tax on new electric vehicles; and maybe reduced insurance premium tax for younger drivers as they have to pay much higher premiums anyway, so it hits them hardest. What gets me about all this is how complicated everything's got to be eg when I first started driving there was just one rate of car tax. There wasn't any insurance premium tax, but note the way it's crept up over the years, probably because they committed themselves to not put up income tax or VAT. A stealth tax, as they used to call it.

IPT was not added as VAT so businesses can not claim it back on the VAT return.

Best solution is to not buy any new cars. Especially electric ones.
    Screw EU
