    Computer help

For many years I have used a Windows XP laptop which is now on its last legs. Last year my daughters boyfriend set this up as the main computer wired to a wireless router and then my daughters Mac and Macbook just ran wireless from this set up. My daughter has now sold me her Mac and I want this to become my main computer, wireless from the router, and then her Macbook can still run as before. I need to lose the Windows laptop as it is fubar'd.
Bearing in mind that I know less about computers than I do about women what do I need to do? I am assuming that I need to put my service providers package onto the Mac. Outlook Express from that package and do something with settings for the router or am I talking rubbish? I am with Orange and really am technically inept on these things.
    Thank you.

I'm no good with Macs i'm afraid

As far as I know, you'll have to use an alternative to Outlook Express though.

Your broadband should already be going into a router so no change there. You just need to hook the Mac up to the router
    Meep Meep.

    Steve,

Give me a call in the morning, we run Mac and PC here so I should be able to talk you through it.

Ok Steve, if you want to do it now.
    Go to System Preferences
    then to Network
under Network Name choose the correct network and password - it should already be connectecd and the pc disconnecting won't make any difference.
    I think thats it .

Thanks guys. I've just checked that Dave and it says it's connected to my network so no problem. Does that mean that I can just disconnect the old Windows laptop and everything will still work, even the wireless router? If so I assume I can then just use the Apple mail program and set it up for my account. Do I not have to load Orange software into the Mac once the laptop is gone?
At the moment the internet works fine on all computers I just assume that once I disconnect the laptop, which has the Orange software installed, everything will stop working.

No I believe the ISP (Orange)software is for the initial set-up - just disconnect the pc and have a go. I think you should be safe, after all you now have a superior Mac - and as an aside, Steve do you know anybody wants a 327/TH350 2 sets of heads etc - gotta make room in my too small garage!

OK Dave I'll trust you and try it later! Won't be until this evening so if it goes wrong I'll be back screaming tonight...
    Thanks for the help.
Paul, I'll try this first thanks.

Eeek! Waiting to see now but think it should be ok - oncve the router is set up and you're connected it's fine. It is unlikely to have been set up so that it all goes through the pc - it'd have to be on for you to use t'internet on other computers in that case

Ooh! Just tried it quickly by disconnecting the laptop and it works. Thanks Dave...now I just need to set up the Mac mail program for my account then. Excellent!
Now if you can just cure the noisy fan...
