electric winch/hoist
does anyone know if a 240v electric winch/hoist is made to hold a load for a long time? ive made a hinged staircase in my garage to access the attic and was looking for ideas as to how to raise/lower it so its out of the way when not in use.. its quite a heavy thing not just a ladder, a electric hoist would lift it, but when in the up position, will it be ok left holding it till the next time it gets used?
any ideas

I have a silver line 240v job rated at 250kg.it held my chevette shell above the dragster for years..a I did was unplugged the power so if I caught the button it didn't move.

i have thought about that as well, but thought it might be handy to have the winch to lift loads up into the loft space as well
also the counterbalance weight will change as the stairs goes throw its ark up down, so if you have it heavy to hold the stair up when you lower it you will have to hold the stair down in someway

yep another option.. it may be wise to do something like that anyway as a safety feature as if it breaks the cable or something it will so some damage if it fell

Just fit some pullys and some hd cable so the wheight goes up/down next to the piviot point............................you should be able to find the right place for it to stay up or down.

The winch should have a safety brake anyway.
If it's got tits or tyres, its gonna be trouble
