I hired a van last week and tanked everywhere at car speeds. You'd think the hire companies would post info in the cabs as well as no smoking stickers..?

BTW, I was a witness to 40Stude's crime and he was banged to rights...

I think that all Hire companies have to display a poster with the limits on somewhere in their office. they probably dont need to tell you about the differences as long as the poster is on the wall..........

So is there a different law for Mercedes Vito vans that they have to be driven at a miniumum 80mph permanently in the outside lane with the preceeding vehicle 2' from their front bumper?....cos that's what they always seem to do. lol.

Always remember my jaw dropping when i was going round the M25 a few years ago in the Chevy at a sedate 60 when a certain mid blue 54 GMC truck owner whizzed by in the 4th lane at about 90 odd....towing a chopper on a matching trailer.

I never cease to be amazed at the amount of people who are unaware that trailers are not allowed on the outside lane on M ways. I assume there is still little or nothing about towing in the driving test. Unless of course that's changed and no one let me know!

hi mick, if you took your test after 1997 (I think) you cant tow a trailer unless you take a special trailer test.

you best be careful, you whipper snappers and your caravans.............check the date you passed your test, i'd hate for you to be caught out

remember when escort vans had that little side window,i was told it was because of those speed limits and you could do the max in one or any other van with side windows(portholes included)

As a speed camera is triggered by the vehicle breaking the speed limit set for that road, how can it tell the difference between a van 10 mph over the limit and a car travelling at legal speed. A far as I'm aware they don't have the ability to identify different types of vehicle do they?
I can understand the reason behind the lower limits, being longer stopping distances of heavier vehicles, but the point about hired vans is valid. A lot of people who rent vans aren't regular van drivers so wouldn't know about such differnces.

and when you pass your test the first vehicle you buy is probably not a transit van so when you were dilligently learning the highway code you more than likely brushed over the van speed limits, then forgot them while scouring autotrader for that elusive mini 1275 gt...

Don't know about that Bob but back in the 50's I seem to remember vans like 300E's, A35's and Morry Thou's had a lower rate of puchase tax which was why lots of them had windows and a back seat fitted - cheap estate car!

Until the tax man caught up with them. If you retro fitted side windows behind the level of the drivers seat back, you had to fork out the extra tax you saved by buying a van! It was always wise to check when you bought one that the previous owner had actually paid the tax or the new owner got stung for it.

Daft thing was if you had a rear seat in a van without side windows it was OK. I know as I spent many a happy hour travelling in the back as a little kid staring at the the dark green side panels of my dads A35 van.
