    Old IT **IT

What does anyone do with hundreds of old floppy discs these days?

Are they going to make a comeback like vinyl? Or should I just chop them up to make them unreadable and bin them? They'd be guaranteed to make a comeback then

Got some old programing stuff as well, like Borland Turbo Pascal, presumably gone way of everything else from '90s programming?

Destroyed hundreds of these for my employer a couple of years ago, we don't throw nowt away so I don't think that they'll be making a come back.

IT depends on what the info is in them, if they are storing loads of info that you want to keep then maybe worth keeping otherwise I can't see the need for them and would transfer the info onto a hard drive or CDs mind you I have a remote floppy reader (unused) if anyone wants it..

    depends on whats on them
i was designing glazing systems way back in cad. the designs are still pretty current and i have occasionally gone back and retrieved some old ideas and solutions.
but i also have a ton of old DOS based system crap. i do need to throw them out and i would suggest you would also.
so if its old computer language stuff..junk it.
if its physical product design or blueprints..review and decide

    just my thoughts

I still have a load of floppy disks as well but its just laziness that stops me binning them. I think the only one I would keep is pics from my graduation day, all the rest will go in the bin.

It's like all this modern old technology. Clearing out my Mum's house and binning the video and cassette tapes and getting shot of working TVs (who wants an old CRT when a new flat screen is so cheap?). Interestingly, will be hanging on to her old Nokia (that she never got hang of) and stored 78's. Some old technology is more equal than others. Is the difference their continued usability? eg in 2018 it's easier to listen to a '30s 78 rpm record than a '70s cassette

I've been pretty good at keeping backups over the years, so the backup media has kept up - originally floppies, then CD, DVD, HDD and some on USB stick - so I probably still have everything of interest. Might not be able to view some of it, like WP documents and old TurboCAD drawings, but I think I have converted most of those over the years anyway. I just hate waste, which is probably why I hate the whole IT thing so much, despite using it everyday. I think I'll sort out the discs with personal data on, and then decide what to do with all the old DOS, Windows, and other software discs.

Then there are the books and manuals . . . oh, and PCs from 386, 486, on up

When I moved to France, I went under the stairs and gave back all the footballs to neighbours kids that had hit my cars over the years...some of them surprised as they were in their 30s visiting mum...I digress......throwing a £3k CRT monitor from my CAD learning days was hard, albeit cathartic...ouch
