Petrol and diesel theft from fuel stations

A good friend of mine works in a supermarket fuel station nearby.last week they had a drive off, quite a regular occurrence.this one was different.2 young blokes in a 59 plate Passat estate, tried filling 4 x 25 litre containers in the boot of the vehicle, got approached by another member of staff who stopped them and they only filled one and sped off.
He was telling me they don’t tackle or stop the thieves because the police very rarely deal with it and if they do catch them about only 1% go to court and find of sentence is very minimal and don’t even cover cost of stolen fuel, police and court costs.shocking I thought!! Then comes the rest of the story, unbelievable!!
On this occasion the vehicle was registered to the owners home address.they were already there for another crime.he denied it but had also been caught for same offence in reading, wokingham, newbury and basingstoke areas! when searching the rented property which the driver shared with his partner and child they found buried in the ground under the patio decking 30 x 205 litre drums full of diesel, over £7500 worth of stolen fuel!!!!
They are being evicted from the property and he is looking at a possible prison sentence, you couldn’t make this up,what goes through these peoples minds??
He was also saying there is in excess of 1.5 million pounds of stolen fuel roughly each year. What is this country coming too?

    met a bloke on holiday.

he did the computer/software side of things inside petrol pumps.he said that for many years they can be linked to in house anpr systems,so they could just stop them nicking fuel,by just not serving them,if the car reg flags up.

but for whatever reason, its never used.

recon the 1.5m of stloen fuel is well under estimated.fooking expensive to fil a car up nowadays

One and a half million in stolen fuel is pennies compared to the multiple billions the fuel companies steal from the public every year (and, yes, also the guberment).

That is probably true but it is the smaller garage owners that suffer most - profit margin on fuel for them is minimal and most punters pay by credit card which incurs further costs - 3 or 4 drive offs a week at £80 a time can hit them hard.

If you could nail these people odds on they'd have committed loads of other crimes/misdemeanours, eg vehicle not registered to them, no insurance, tax and that's before you get into all the other low life criminal activity. All this ANPR stuff is all very well, but it tends to get people who make minor infringements, but who are otherwise legit. I used to work in petrol stations back in the day when you went out and put fuel in the vehicles (like they still do in a lot of the Continent). Back then, if somebody drove off without paying it'd come out of your pay. Luckily it never happened to me as such, but I remember chatting to a bloke with an MG TD and whilst distracted put in more fuel than he'd asked for. He reckoned he didn't have any more money, but would come back to pay difference. Of course he never did, so a tough lesson for this 18 year old.

I just wonder if the petrol station still has to pay the duty / VAT. I assume not so, whilst they've lost say £1.30 per litre, after duty that's more like a 50p loss.

Still, any thiefs are nicking from all of us. The petrol firms will factor in a theft allowance in to their pricing for unrecoverable/uninsured losses.

It could be stopped with pre pay pumps, but they want to get people into the shop, so companies are pretty content to stand the loss. They make more on shop sales than fuel, which mainly goes to Govt

but there's a sting in the tail as well.... most of these shops were/are run by a franchisee who makes bugger all from the petrol or a fraction of a penny a litre at best, but the oil companies hold them responsible for drive offs!
