Red facePost Apocalyptic Vehicle (go with it)

    Bare with me.

The other day a Doomsdayist that comes into work bought in his 4x4x4 survival landrover. A HUGE! 300td powered hi rise of a beast, that has pods and winches and god alone knows what stuck all over it.
He's spent the last 2 years building it. Now it looks pretty damn evil in a mad max kind if way, but I asked him if he really thought it was the way to go in event of the rapture or what ever he thinks is coming?
Anyway he's coming back in on Tuesday to find out what I think is the ideal after the "THUNDER" ride, so I'm going to run it past you guys first to see what you all think.

Remember, he's had 2 years building his so I think a bit of fabrication is allowed.

I'm going with a tube frame, a bit like a sandrail, using ford based front suspension and a mid mounted earlyish ford small displacement diesel engine. Why? Well, I think something light made out of common parts is the way forward. A pucture? Any ford/pug/cit will fit. Bend a bottom suspension arm? Rip one off the first fiesta you find. Blow the engine? That focus will do… etc. What are the chances of finding a landy water pump?
The small displacement diesel in a light vehicle would be plenty nippy, give good MPG and could run on used engine oil with some tweaks.
Need more room for stuff? A trailer that could be dropped if needs be.

    Who's your money on?

Or any other ideas I could throw at him?

If I can convince him my DOOM BUGGY is a better idea he's buying me a breakfast bap

    Chaley

(I know I've put too much thought into this, but there is breakfast involved!)
And on the 6th day Man created god.

Since most full on doomsday scenarios will be caused by someone's itchy nuclear missile finger you need a vehicle that can fit inside a bunker when the bomb goes off, so size is a factor. You also need to know that when a bomb goes off it fries the electronics in a certain blast radius. so, anything with a computer to control the engine or any systems will not work after the bomb and emf pulse.

Then you need to move on to the fact that you need to live in a filtered air environment for a number of unspecified months after the blast so you don't breathe in contaminated dust, so the bunker/vehicle needs to be airtight and have filtration systems.

You might have to stay in the vehicle if you are away from the bunker so its got to be a van, not an estate as that will have large venerable side windows. fewer doors as possible so as to help seal it all up.

The air the engine will breathe will contaminate the engine so it needs to be reliable so you don't need to touch it or work on it.

Fuels will be in short supply so it need to get good mpg or at least run on loads of different stuff like heating oil, chip fat or if you are lucky diesel, this is better because these types of fuel do not degrade as fast as modern petrol which can be useless after a short time of storage.

So, small, simple, van, diesel with mods to filter air.

Astra van ? Circa 1990, 1700 non turbo 8V motor. Fit big tyres and a winch, you can kip in the back and put an air filter system on a roof rack.

    vauxhall astra van | eBay

But obviously Matt Black. with the windows plated over and big moon discs protecting the wheels and tyres, actually, fill the tyres with that gel stuff so they don't get punctures.

Its less faff to just stand out in the middle of a field and get blown to bits in the first instance to be honest. you would do all this prep and then starve to death because the shops will be closed...

Don't forget to make it zombie proof. In many of the documentaries that I have seen zombies seem to be a significant problem on post apocalyptic earth.

If they start throwing nukes around you are all very welcome to try to carry on with the cockroaches . Me ? I'll be pulling up a chair for a ringside seat for the firework display.
