    Question

    One for the Cadillac people..

When talking about something like a Fleetwood Broughm...

Is it pronounced BRAWM, or is it BROOM?

And, anyone know where the name comes from?

Both of those are just about right - its spelt Brougham - I say Broom
but Bro-erm is also just about correct. Bruff-em and Broog-ham are totally wrong.

In terms of a horse-drawn carriage which is where it originates, its the one where the rear passenger compartment is closed in but the drivers compartment is open to the elements - it is slightly raised but no where near where you'd sit on a Stage Coach.

The original version of the car - 1956 Eldorado Brougham show car was styled thus but subsequent versions were closed cars but the name was kept for Top-of-the-line Cadillac 4 door cars!

Named after some Nobleman of some description who had a penchant for that type of luxury carriage!

Intrestingly, Dashboard also comes from horse drawn vehicles - it was the board to stop horse manure flying up at you as you went along!

No problem - I should add it was used pre-war by various manufacturers some as a name and some to describe a style of car - some with the open front!

Cadillac made it there own in the fifties but every now and then another maker would put it on their cars too!
