I thought the radio stations already paid PRS themselves whenever they play a tune so what they're doing now is efectively asking you to pay twice. Once through the licence fee (or buying products from advertisers on comercial radio) then again with a prs licence. I first hear about this a few months ago and even the musicians who suposedly benifit from it were against it.
If everybody in the garage (or any other work place) were listening on headphones it wouldn't count as a "puplic performance" so you wouldn't need to pay, even if they were all listening to the same station. Alternativley turn to Radio 4 (no music).

Just thought, If I overhear the radio in somebody's car is that a public performance too?

The headphones thing has been brought up at a workshop I used to visit until it was pointed out that health and safety didn't approve as there was no way to shout a warning at someone if they were wearing headphones, effectively cutting out all outside sounds.

I ran a chauffeur company for 20+ years (until this year ) and I received a letter from the prs people last year stating that they were looking at ways to charge public and private hire companies that had a radio in their vehicles because it was available for the public to listen to...as far as I'm aware it hasn't come in yet but I don't doubt for a minute that it will. :****er:
