I was told that creosote will annihilate just about anything that grows, not sure if it'll kill the rats, but it certainly won't do them any favours.

Yeh roundup contains "glyphosate" any weed killer containing glyphosate will kill anything organic as it is systemic and travels down the plant to kill the roots.
To collect dead rats try this, a half submerged bucket half full of water will do it. The rats climb in attracted to the water and fall in, but can't climb up the slippery sides or the bucket and drown. This tip was given to me by a chicken farmer and seems to work well, or try the "big cheese"

Search Amazon for "Rosate" and you can get glyphosate in undiluted form much cheaper than Roundup.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups....
