    The idea years ago was that the bobby on the beat could see the tax disc and know by implication, if valid, that car was also insured. Of course, modern govt is besotted with everything digital so the road tax is still there, but the disc has gone as that involved people. Now funnily enough more people get away without having road tax and correspondingly no insurance which has pushed up the cost of both for everyone else.

    I think in Australia, or somewhere, basic 3rd party insurance is covered in your fuel cost, as MMNeil references.

    yep, i thought it was a stupid idea doing away with the disc. nice easy quick check for plod or anyone.

    It didn't stop people canceling their insurance as soon as they got their tax disc tho'...

    South Africa used to do this.

    There's bigger reasons for doing away with the tax disc and allowing monthly direct debit for VEL
