    TV volume??

Is it just me, or does the telly go much louder when the ads come on, specially when you're watching some of the feature films. It was really noticeable watching Harry Potter yesterday. You would think with all the technology around today, they could balance the volume out

Yes, its very annoying - especially if you've got the surround sound wound right up. The adverts nearly burst your eardrums.

It's meant to be illegal (see here

BBC NEWS | Magazine | Why are TV adverts so loud?

But what happens is, although the ads can't be any louder than the loudest part of the programme, they use sophisticated technology to amplify every part of the advert. So although your film or programme has varying volume of sound, to provide nuance, the advert will consistently be as loud as the explosion or exciting chase music. It's particularly bad for people like me who are partially deaf, we have to have the TV on loud to hear the film properly, but most of us have hearing loss in the upper register, while most ads have high volume in the lower register - resulting in KABAM! when the ads come on....

This ****es me off, I have to turn the volume down all the time.

In fact surround sound is pretty annoying in the same way. If you have the volumes set so you can just hear the quiter speech then the explosions and shooting are ridiculously loud, the neighbours will get the arse with gun fire at midnight

In my opinion the advertisers are shooting themselves in the foot as I just turn the volume off completely during the breaks.
I find that on surround sound if you raise the centre channel balance you can keep the voices hearable without the gunshots and explosions being overpowering.

My surround sound/dvd player is a bit old now, I assume that sort of control comes with an AV receiver. I need an AV receiver as the blu ray player doesn't connect up to the surround sound properly.

Good tip re muting the adverts
