    That's what I think they are, just metal flaps that look to be sprung (is that what you call reed valves?) I didn't want to mess with them as they look like the kind of thing that if you so much as touch them they will never work again.

    Well done that man, that's exactly what the problem was (sorted now) the crank shaft bearings are ball races and have little pins in that locate in recesses in the block. One of these was out of line and stopping the two halves of the crank case from sealing. As soon as I put it back together properly it fired up first time.
