    i've got a 2000 passat estate and that eat's rear tyres on one edge as well ........

    i just put it down to towing and abuse .......

    stick a 3" nail in the corner of the tread let the air out of the tyre then drive to get the tyre replaced tell them its been driven on flat the wont even try & repair it.
    then you now its legal

    Dont even bother drilling a hole in it, just let the air out and drive it for a bit, put your spare on and go to ATS.
