HPI is used by all finance houses and teh Police. All the big companies share details anyway, thats Hpi, Experian and the new one from Trader Media.

If you hpi prior to purchase, check the Visable VIN, and reg number are correct, and that the make model and colour are correct and match what you are looking at all should be ok.
However, if you are paying well below the proper market price you should be expected to know that something is wrong.
Likewise, if you pay in cash there is no trail backwards via the sellers bank account.
Also dont meet in a carpark. Go to the sellers house. This should be the same address as on the logbook. If not, why not???

Should you have taken all the necessary precautions, and paid a proper market value, then HPI will indemnify your purchase. I think they will refund you up to about £10,000 should the car later be found to be stolen or subject to finance. Check their website to find out what level they cover you for.

the only way to get the police to check it is say that you have been offered or bought a car that you think may be wrong or stolen

About 6-7 years ago, bought a van from ad in Auto Trader,i'd been in the motor trade and used to looking for ringers.Anyway se;;er was very nice, all numbers and id where they should be and logbook at viewing address.Paid the man ,yes was cash as thats what most people prefere and hey-ho drive away in a £7K van with a smile.(van had bottom book at 8K) two months pass and CID come acalling..................Was a ringer.Tried to by back off insurance as they paid out being stolen and they wanted another 7.5K.

To cut a long story short this was a major scam,26 or so cars and 30 odd vans, each ringed and registered to a rented accomadation address. They'd paid a years rent up front to the landlord.then went a ringing. There used to be a 4 -5 week "dead space" where you send off V5 and recieving it.iE they would still send out V5 AND WRITE TO PRESENT OWNER ASKING IF THEY HAVE SOLD IT.Hence ringer had V5 in his name at his address.CID told me un officially they'd made over a million as my van was on the lower end of the price range.
