Acting The Goat. My Pontiac build

This is how my car looked when I bought it for £200 in 1987. Bought at 1AM in the rain, one 1972 Pontiac Le Mans Sport, bit rough around the edges but good engine and interior. Car was destined for the scrap yard as the owner at the time did not think it was worth fixing, I took it for an MOT to see what was needing done and it passed first time. LOL.

Done a deal with a friend for the use of his garage for a week, plan was to cut out the rot and primer over the repairs …

Ended up taking a month, mainly because one of my friends neighbours sold me a gallon of paint for a Tenner, paint turned out to be Massey Ferguson red, tractor paint, this was the first time I had painted a car and was quite pleased with how it turned out especially as it had cost less than £100 all in.

This lasted about a year until I blew the engine up one day, so the car came off the road for an engine rebuild, the engine turned out to be toast and as I had no money to fix it or buy a new one I decided to start on the body work as that £100 paint job was not fairing up to well…

I wanted to do it right this time so cut out all the rot and replaced with new metal, I had always wanted a GTO but could never afford one so I did the next best thing and built a clone, I bought a load of GTO bits from a guy in Glasgow, the pile of bits included brand new rear fenders plus all the front end sheetmetal and brackets.

The plan was to try and make it look more modern and it had to be as low as I could get it, this was a rendering that I done of how I wanted it to look…

Bought this for £300 relieved it of its engine and box, tilt column and lots of other bits and pieces, then sold the remains for £150…

    Trial fitting the engine

Removed all the air con and other bits and welded in a new firewall

As can be seen in the previous pictures I had decided to fit hydraulics in my quest to get the car on the deck. System is home made using lorry tail lift pumps, rams purchased from Reds hydraulics in America and hoses made up by a local firm. Springs are fitted in custom buckets on the rear axle, fronts go in the original location but with relocated shocks.
