    Beachcomber's Vanguard Estate - Survivor.

Time for one final Rod [ probably ] before I fall off the perch - being realistic - not morbid!

I found the ad on here just before my PC was hacked [ for the 2nd time ] - and even then the ad. was about 18 months old. I'd had a Vanguard Estate when we had Sandwood Automotive in Tamworth - and regretted selling it then [ as you do in hindsight with MOST things ].

Anyway - soon did a deal for my Land Rover TDI powered Rover P4 and work ..err didn't start for sges.

Due to loss of "promised" workshop space, it's remained outside under tarps ever since.

The body is remarkably sound and rust [ as in holes ] free. As are the doors, scuttle, roof, fenders etc. In fact all the parts you'd expect to be attacked on a 60 year old car. However, having tracked the original owner [ 1 owner from new ] and the history courtesy of Gloucester Archives, I found it was driven into a barn [ dry ] in 1966 and stored there ever since until it was sold to the guy I did the deal with.

After playing with various ideas, I decided to keep the "survivor" look intact and simply upgrade the running / rolling gear.

So plan so far - Volvo [PVR ] 2.8ltr V6 with M112 Eaton Blower, BW35/55 Auto [ when I can find one ]. Original hubs etc fitted with BMW discs [ front ] - adaptors and 8" x 16" Jag alloy 5 spokes. Plans also include a swap to rack and pinion with MGTF electric power assist. BMW 5 series leather front seats with integral seat belts, electric front window lifts [ Scimitar ? ]

I want it to be a daily driver - as I'm fed up getting shafted with £260 + road tax and all that nonsense.

I also need an external sun visor - which I'll get moulds made for.

So, given I can only work outside AND I have no real welding fab skills - could be some time - don't get old fellas.

Yes it was ......... there's been at least 3 peeps who said they'd been thinking about it for the previous 12 months before I did the deal with my P4 !

Worse parts are the sills [ replacements available from the club ] and the floor - which is pretty well non existant. However the chassis is completely solid.

Other than that [ and the surface corrosion ] there's virtually nothing - a bit in the rear lower edges, ditto front fenders behind the wheels. There is one patch 3 " long in the bottom of one rear door. ALL the other panels are sound. Even the inner flitches / bulkhead / scuttle are totally solid. Amazing for a car almost 60 years old. Even the 8" x 16" Jag alloys fit under the spats / fender wells.

Just finalising the retention of the original reg # ........ RAD 392 [ Hemi anyone ? ] which has been no problem to date. The Standard Club has been very supportive - none of this "what you doing with our Classic" nonsense. Anywway as I've always said - Rodders were around a long time before restorers - think about it.

I want to retain the original "patina" - ie the rust ! And after trying various products - I've decided to leave it as is for the time being and see how it goes. The current corrosion seems to have formed a solid crust and has not deteiorated in the 12 months it's been stood outside. I have a cunning plan to disguise the repair panels - that's the plot anyway.

I have all the glass and trim - except the centre vertical trim that covers the vee in the windscreen. Even the special screen gasket is intact.

Funny enough, when I was doing the deal with Arthur - our vision was almost identical - slammed, louvred bonnet, external sun visor and lake pipes ! Arthur was probably in for a blown V8 - I can't afford such toys these days, so Blown V6 it has to be ! V8 Devon - whereabouts in Redditch neighbour ?

Almost forgot ...... I bought a Viva HC front clip complete. Surface corrosion where it's bee sat in a shed for 15 years - but complete and useable. Bought for the Vanguard - but decided to modify the OEM front end.

As soon as I find my way to the "for sale" section, I'll list it there.

You need 10 posts to be able to put an ad in the for sale section.
I'm actually in Studley at the moment.
Heard Arthur had got a diesel P4 from the lady at a sandwich van in Pershore, oddly! Put 2+ 2 together.
I vaguely remember you down at Dave Broadbent's yard with some imported trucks about 15 years ago.

Funny how the Chinese whispers go around ...... never made a sandwich in my life - or been a lady !

Yes, main buisness at Hanbury was replica Porsche 356, 550 and Kharmann Ghia convertibles + plus I designed and prototyped a Cobra rep for Germany and France. Forced retirement in 2000.

P4 in original paint - went round the Nurburgring hitting 120 at one point !

    The conversion

    As it left me
