oh, and i've still been buying parts. over the last year i've bought (seperately) a speedway straight tube axle, a pair of repro early ford 37-41 spindles with a kingpin kit and a chassis engineering brake kit that's ford/mopar 5 stud which i'm told uses mopar rotors. i started mocking at all up the other day and found i needed the top hat spacers for the inner bearings and seals, castle nuts and washers and dust caps. all easily bought from speedway so they're all on the way. the dust caps were $5.99 a pair or $7.99 for chrome ones, so as i don't have centre caps for my slot mags i went shiny.
now the car's been exhumed (i took the cover off sunday) i'll do some more to it, i even found the rest of the new lock set so i fitted them too.
    cheers, neil.

as we both need to lose some weight i've bought dawn a 70's bsa shopper 20. she showed me a hercules her mum used to have which is basically a copy of a raleigh shopper as is the bsa. only £50 and really in very nice condition. the tyres are cracked so i've ordered 2 new ones and while the wheels are out we'll go over it with some polish and oil. she's happy which as any married man will know is a good thing. for me i have my dad's old again 70's raleigh transit which he used to ride daily at work on a 5 mile loop taking in seasalter seafront. i've kept it meaning to 'do it up one day' as you do. this is that day. so far i've stripped it to the frame and stretched it so the wheelbase is now 18" longer. it's not a show thing so a quick go over the welds with a flapwheel on the grinder and a rub down with a couple of fine-ish da discs and it was ready for paint. 2 coats of rattle can primer and 4 of rattle can gloss black and that's good enough for me. i've ordered new handlebars and stem, gear and brake cables (red outers), 2 chains to get the length and i already have bigger whitewalls and a new comfy gel seat. so here's some pics of where i am so far. i had a quick mockup with the old rolling stock to see the proportions were right once it was all tacked up. the ladies frame beside the extended version was (apart from being a ladies bike) dimensionally the same as i started with.

i picked up the speedway parts for my straight tube axle from the post office today ( had duties to pay before they'd release them) and loads of bits for my pushbike arrived too. i think tomorrow i'll get the bike wheels painted then finish mocking up the tube axle while the paint dries.

Looks a great project, and love the stretch, Neil.

Bicycle projects are so containable from a cost/time point of view. A couple of years ago i was out for a walk with my daughter and somebody had left a mountain bike in bits at the end of their garden 'free to collector'. Dived home and got missus's hatchback. A few bits missing, and stuff needed research, but with £30 worth of bits from Covid Central, and bits I already had around, I got myself a good working bike.

the speedway top hat spacers use a different hub seal as it appears they use chevy hubs/discs not the mopar ones i have. i'll have a look on ebay to see if i can order the right seals and if not i'll call kent bearings on tuseday to get a pair.

yes mate, they don't take up too much room for sure. the other ladies frame in one of the pics was a complete bike i got from the local tip. a guy was just getting it out of his boot and i asked if i could have it. he was happy to see it get another life so it was mine. his dad had bought it new for his mum in the 70's along with some accessories and it's now in as many bits as my dad's old bike awaiting it's turn for a stretch.

Our local recycling centre has any number of bikes at no more than $15 (£7) each. Last time I needed tyes for mine it was way cheaper to buy a whole bike with good tyes.

Like the stretched bike. It’ll turn a few heads for sure.
This is my last attempt as a bike-modder, a lightweight road bike turned into a Lightweight trade bike. It’s a bit of a sleeper, as it weighs less than a load of new aluminium racers

The next one is going to be a lady’s frame turned into a board tracker…

Oh and have you done anything with that tub yet? I only had in sat in the garage for 8 years so…

here's where i am so far, no white walls as strangely an american 26 x 2.125 tyre isn't 26" like our's are? whoodathunkit? so back on with the black walls it was. next i cleaned the bearing races for the headstock and the pedal spindle of years of hard old grease and repacked them with fresh grease and put all the balls back in place. wheels in and it's a roller so i dropped the 'zoom' bmx stem and handlebars into the headstock and the seat and stem at the back and it's a bike again. tomorrow i'll get the brakes and gears reconnected/fitted with the new matching red cables and it's nearly there. i may keep an eye out for bars with more rise as the seating position is a bit more bobber than easy rider but we'll see how it rides.
