    back on the tina,
with all the ignition problems sorted ( hopefully ) its time to sort the other big problem, the gearbox.

ever since i built the car the gearbox has been a reel pain so its out with the old and in with the new. the new being a mazda rx 8 5 speed, i have made the adaptor plate and i have a rover flywheel at the machine shop being machined to fit the rx 8 ring gear.
now because the car was built around the old gear box its not going to be easy to do the swap so today i started cutting the old gearbox mount out and fabricated a new one . with that done the chassis rail was next, its were the starter motor wants to be so i have made a new section up and welded it in. im just hoping i dont have to remove any of the floor.

i will get some pics on tomorrow.

the floor sections that wanted tweaking are now all done and all the new parts arrived just before xmas.

    new pedal box,

an exedy 6 speed clutch kit,

also the flywheel has been machined,

i am using a 6 speed clutch assy even though i only have a 5 speed box because the clutch diameter is bigger.

i made a bracket the other day to mount the new pedal box in to the foot well,

i have changed the fixing points from 6mm to 8mm.

i have changed the pedal box because with everything under the dash it was a real pain to work on, so now with the new set up it will be very easy to service.

This build was so epic, I always felt that the gearbox was the weak point, glad you are getting it sorted now.
I'm hoping to use a RX8 6 speed behind my Zetec so will watch with interest.
Pedal box looks great, hmm, bet it wasn't cheap though!
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt", but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

    cheers ian,
your right when it comes to the box its never really been any good. pedal box was not to bad really price wise £395 all in.

the pedal box is now all mounted to the floor and all the brake pipes are done. i have put the rx8 gearbox onto the cortina.s engine and put it back in so i can weld on the mounts as i need to move the hand brake back a little as the new box is a little longer.

    more soon.

    got a bit more done,
i have had to move the handbrake back abit because of the new gear stick position which turned out to be alot easier than i thought. with that and the box in it as a knock on effect and that is the trans tunnel cover panel, it now does not fit.
so its out with the sheet metal and the bead roller to make a new one. this time how ever i am going to make it in 3 pieces as the old one was a pain to remove.

    bit more done.
made up the next piece ,

over the last few years the garage seems to get really cold (or i could just being getting old ) so over the last few months we have been installing a fire with a back boiler so later on we could plumb in a few radiators. today was the day when we could finally fire it up.

what a difference , its going to make working in winter alot better.
