Go on then ... Point and Laugh ... I can take it !!!

YAAAAY !!! ... Most of the pictures are back at last !!

Last time I had a half-decent road car was on 1979 ... '67 Chevy Nova - threw out the 307+auto and stuffed in a big-block and 4 speed .. it was a real hack of a job, and since then kids, jobs all over the world and general inertia have kept me out of the scene. So at last I have the time, and now tat I'm 61 I also have the patience. Via the family I have the facility (a boatshed at the bottom of a family member's garden) and I even found some slack cash ... so there were no more excuses ... I decided to stand up and be counted again ...

I really can't afford a 'proper rod' and the Dutch C&U regs are very strict about testing (so much so that you need a huge pot of cash just to pay for the tests after you've built the car) so I went for a ...

    ... a ...

    ... aww heck I admit it .. a Beetle ...

There's only one other street legal volksrod in the Netherlands, as far as I know, and that one is a pickup, registered as a buggy. My intention is to build a full-bodied volksrod which complies with the Dutch regulations (no change in wheelbase, no significant engine change, no chassis alterations, no variation to the method od preserving the rigidity, no alteration to the type of vehicle, etc. etc.) ... if I can do all that, all I need to do is get it MOT'd when its built ... and it may be a first in Holland, plus it will show the way for other Dutch volksrodders ...

Chopped, channeled, dropped, fenderless (cycle guards), sectioned vertically to give the 'wheels out front' look of a rod ... and all done on my own, with minimal tools, a welder and a compressor, in a boatshed in the middle of Holland ...

The project should be nearing completion next summer, and it's been on-going for about 9 months to date ...

Here's the cartoon strip of progress to date ...

and this weekend I've enlisted the help of a couple of able-bodied young fellas and we're going to lift the body shell back onto the chassis/floors/heater boxes for the first time since the project began ...

If anyone is interested, I'll pick up the build from here and start posting the events as they unfold ...

There's some very good work in there, Shortening the body is a good solution to the wheelbase issue, plus it means you don't have to stretch the roof after the chop. Still a shed load of work either way so full respect for that. I'll be following the progress on this.

Excellent and a great 'can do' attitude, rather than being put off by what you can't do ...seeing what you can build within the regs

Great work what a shame your talents have been dormant; I will definitely keep looking at the progress. Hopefully when it’s finished you can visit us in the UK, will be nice to see it in the flesh.
