    good question mr P...

well trip to the scrappy paid off nicely ...

two coils ..one golf one polo, and looking at them.

i realised one of them was not well..so i beheaded it ..

which left me with the module , that , in theory would trigger with a 5 volt signal from the brain of morbius.

    did the other one too..

then found i had a third setup in the green house , so used that module because it was bigger , so must be better right ?

    popped them on a bracket..

all ready to mount ,as lady Chatterlies groom said ..

oh slight misshap , i went to test the modules to see if they would work , and having worked on gm a lot went hmm brown to positive ,then wondered why it was blowing 10 amp fuses ..er ok that will be black to positive then ...didn't kill them either .

so now all mounted and i can do the wide bands tomorrow , and work out why they are reading 20 on the sensor and 10 on the brain ...aiming for next startup try on saturday ...make a note on your diaries !!!

    regards robert

robert, don't forget modules like some of that white grease between them and the heat sink they're bolted to (or cable tied to as per the pics) so they don't get heat stroke
    neil.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

valid point Neil , this was a strange setup ,i tried to remove what i thought was a encapsulated module from the ally 4 legged bracket that mounted the coil , and found out that the module does not have two sides ! , the side against the ally is open ,and sealed to the ally plate ,with goop , so if you pry the module up ....you see electronics and chips .so i pushed it back down ,and checked it still worked ,and zip tied it together with another module i found i had that DID have a base plate ,..close escape from breaking the module i pried .

Today was another attempt at a startup ....total failure , but learnt interesting new stuff.

as usual i forgot to make notes , so i'm sure Graham will correct me if i have it all wonky ..

First off i cranked car , but not much action ocuring .cranking speed was around 100 rpm .

i then realised i had left the fuses out of the inj feeds .

fuses in and try again ,little bit of firing but not much ,feels like timing is wrong .

we try increasing fuelling ,and it becomes a little more eager but not enough to stop cranking .

we do an experiment where graham cranks it and i listen to the injectors with a stethoscope ,rear inj firing , front not .

we scope the injector returns , and get a waveform for both channels .

i turn gas pressure down on front engine ,to 10 psi , by winding the adjustment screw IN .also drop pressure to zero to see if inj then open , crank car and i THINK i can hear them working , put 10 psi on them and not working , we can also tell if they are opening by the gas rail pressure , if i turn off the gas ,and crank, the rail should go to zero ,as it does on the engine 2 .

so something odd with the front inj set , which is the cheap set i got off ebay .

it was still trying to do something on cranking with the rear engine , so we focused on that , we tried to check timing , .but the strobe would not flash on crank ,i got a plug popped it in its ht lead ,and tried to stop cranking when it flashed ,this suggested we were way off on no2 engine , so i did an experiment where i set the oddfire setting in ms2 to 15d instead of 45d, thinking maybe the brain is saying to itself 12 cylinder engine , so 60 degree firing gaps , and my 45 d offest is 15 degrees early from the normal 12 cyl engine ...

cranked again , and this time we could get a flashing strobe as it ran up to 600 rpm momentarily , we saw the spark about 10 atdc ,on engine 2 ,and about 5 atdc on engine 1 .... NOTE it should be 10 btdc on cranking ....

also ,although the timing seemed vaguely right , it still feels like it is massively advance .... we put the pointer on the tdc mark and pulled the dizzy cap , assuming the arm must be pointing at the wrong cylinder , but it looked fine .

this is with the oddfire offset at 15 d ,and the trigger wheel set at 9d..btdc..at this point we tried to work out the correct setting but our brains melted , it had been a long day .

    so things to do ,

find out whats up with the front injectors.

find a way to get something that will flash on cranking so i can definately strobe the cranking spark and be sure its ok .

work out correct settings for triggering points.

    regards
    robert.

my pleasure Andy , and thank you , i am afraid this bit is bit dry and geektastic , but the rev up when it finally works should be worth it ..one encouraging thing was , after a bit of 600 rpm stumbling from Engine 2 , all the headers were the same temperature ,,so that was new !!

    regards
