Great news that you got it running much better at last, but non numerical brain means I don’t get the numbers bit

I do understand those nice pics of Monument Valley though, we flew all over it in a light plane a while ago

Have you seen the video going round of that chap booting it away from a show and hitting a wall?

Saw it at Witney last night - looked good and was popular with the public!

Six miles away, Uranus? Sounds like Eynsham to me

It must be a tad disappointing for you, posting all of the data, and then some ignoramus like me looks at it and says oh, right, it's a graph, next picture please! rest assured that I am as pleased for you as someone who understands the graphs and tables, an epic job (even though I don't understand words like mega, and, squirt)
Just a passer by as you might say.

nope but i did hear and then see the poor chap that pulled a 10" too far over the kerb to try to see past the spectators on the exit to the show , in a old 80's opel i think it was ,...and he was promply ran into by a huge double decker bus that was doing about 20 mph and didn't deviate or slow for the crowds AT ALL ,,folded his wing and bonnet up ,and basically triangulated the car .

Thanks Jack , weirdly it did seem to get noticed

well ..interestingly , this week was a colossal dissapointment on every facet of my existence , however , being british , i carried on .

Car wise , i went for a drive on tuesday to do some mapping , allowing the puter to set the mixture as i drove , i was expecting the car to drive well , however , due to some corruption of the puter due to my connecting to it with a different ecu's setup on the program , , it drove like it had no fuel from 1400 to 1800 ,then 100% throttle for the rest of it , this was very dangerous ,bit like having a child in the passenger seat playing with the button for a 250 shot of nitrous ...a lot of wheelspinning ensued !

I had done an experiment , trying to create a stronger vacuum signal to the car sensor , i had swapped the 6mm 5ft long pipe ,for a length of brake pipe 1.5mm in diameter . so i turned round after my destination ,and parked up down a side rd to swap it back to the 6mm pipe , thinking the little small bore pipe maybe why it was runnning so pooh .

keyed p the ignition to start it , wuh wuuuuhhh ,nothing ....oh wonderfull..

however i had brought my jump leads and another supposedly good battery ,so connected it all up , wuuuhwuh click ,still naff all .

so i am thinking starter motor , while i stand by the car with my jump leads in my hand ,hoping someone stops to give me a ..er... jump .

i looked like a geek male escort with a electrical fetish trying to pick up a like minded cougar .

it was getting pretty dark and thundery ,just to add to the drama of it all , when a chap from my village stopped and pulled his brand new mazda suv up ..brilliant .we popped on the leads ,and the car fired up straight away , no problem cranking .

got home , still a wheelspin fest , and had a look at the data logs , it was only showing 12,3 v ,so no charging was going on ...now this could be the battery drawing down the current , or the alternator dead .

so i hoicked this battery out ..

and borrowed this from my good man martin up the rd ...

well! that span it over no probs ,and i started it to see the alternator situation and it was right round to 14 v even at tickover .

so a new battery needed , for the nonce i have this one on loan .

    next problem .

the 4.0 , has allways been oily ,and i thought it was because the back 2 cylinders wree not firing ,and so it wa collecting ....er .no ...like many of my predictions the last few months , i was completely wrong about what was going on .

even with it firing , its v v oily ,,

here's a typically poor robert pic down the plug hole ...

yup , thats my piston dish doing a super duper impression of the cornish beach pools during the torrey canyon disaster , a lake of oil sits thereupon .

so , i know i have changed all the guide seals ,so they have either come off , or all the oil control rings are jammed .

only solution is to take out the engine , or smoke all the time , weirdly it does not smoke on cruise , just accel and fire up .

to try to use the car for the summer i have taken option no3.

    this ..

this abortion is a one way valve , and a vacuum source ,connected to the breather . martin reminded me the other day of a car that was too smokey for the mot , that i fixed up years ago with a high vac feed to the breather , so stopping oil being sucked up past the pistons due to the pressure in the sump being the same vacuum , and it went from super smokey to clean as a whistle , ...i had in my usual self absorbed way , completely forgotten it , so here is the same approach , time will tell if its a winner .

and that is my week , all good clean fun .

    regards
    robert.

Let’s hope that fixes the smoke thing, you need to be out and about cos Medusas public needs to lay eyes on and even touch the object of their desire!

    Now then , where was i ?

    OH YERRS ...

this week i have mostly been eating chicken broth and plain yoghurt with brown sugar and gravel.

Apart from that oi bin a werkin on ye olde motor..ee.

first thing was , i popped up to my friends workshop . .

    proof..

and while there , did a little test to try to work out why the battery seems to get low , i watched the voltmeter , and turned on the fans with the engine's running .

now , a good result would be the voltage staying at 14v ,showing the alternator could cope with the 20 amps extra from the fans drawing in the battery ....however , in this case that is not what happened ...like a marathon runner who'd eaten one too many pasties the night before , the alternator did the equivalent of him staggering to the ground 4 miles before the line .... it went right down to 12.3volts .

No wonder my battery was going flat!

i did an experiment ,connected the car to the sun tester , and watched the amps when i put on the fans ...

yup , that's minus 50 AMPS , and although that was on the switch on spike , and it does settle down to 34 amps , this is without the two wide band sensors working or the lights on , so my little incky 50 amps denso alternator is not enough .

So started the great alternator hunt ,and i gathered this motley crew together ...

there is everything there from 50 to 150 amps ,however the bigger ones were a bit too big to fit easily , so in the end i swapped this ..

    for this ..

which is only 70 amps . , it's off an astra , and hopefully there is a higher output one out there in the same size .

however , i hooked it up the the tester again , after my new 15mm longer belt arrived (5 quid off ebay)..

and with everything turned on ,including the lights , but not the wide bands sensors , i got this ..

yup , +10 AMPS so charging even with all that on .noice ....

Next thing was to correct an unfortunate side effect of the oil sucky mechanism i put on ,, it seems to work ,but left me with no vacuum for my brakes , due to the vac stubs being 1.3 mm , and the airflow not enough for both vac sump and servo.

to try to help with this i dismantled the entire copper pipe array, ,and carefully drilled out the 4mm copper stubs to 3mm . then rebuilt it all . ...hopefully this will give a big increase in vac flow , and keep the servo charged .

    regards
    robert

I have no doubts about your range of skills but drilling something out from 4mm to 3mm is very impressive. Or did I misunderstand it?
