    likewise, I cut my teeth building A-Series engine in Autograss, essentially stock 998cc engine but it turned into blueprinting and building the strongest and lightest engine within the rules. Got a bit silly though as you were effectively machining the max allowable off a part under the guise of "reconditioning". I was taking near 1.2mm off a head (a specific casting too) to raise compression, flywheels ground right down, rods ground and resized to lighten, cranks ground to max undersize to lighten, blocks decked to the max, blocks bored +60, weighing piston and ring packs on the counter at Minispares, buying 3-4 of the spec cam and measuring the lift and duration. We used old oil pumps to reduce parasitic loss, no alternator, old pressed rockers etc. Even used to measure the installed heights of a selection of heads to see which OEM casting variance would give the highest seat pressure without cutting the seat deeper. Got silly with too much effort when I could just go up a class, run a 1380cc with a 45DCOE and have fun.

    Built a 998 for my sisters mini, 1100 block, 998 crank , flat top pistons, 997? cooper cam, brand new MG (was that 1100) head skimmed 60 thou. and a light flywheel on a 1100 gearbox in a mini, LCB and twin SU .Went ok but never got the needles right in SUs.
