finally got it started, had to chop out the CAT 1 Alarm and rig up a separate 12v feed for the ignition as the starter draw is still dropping voltage to 7.8v when cranking. I'll address that but had to get this started to ensure the motor had no issues

Had to get it going on brake cleaner, tweaked the timing and it started pulling fuel through. It was retarded so got hot quite quick, roasted the headers, but then it puked its coolant. I suspect it was just finding it's level and maybe needs a higher pressure cap. It needs to be timed properly, idle set up and cam broken in

Overall happy to get it going and isolated the problems to fix

Not making a huge amount of progress as I'm struggling for time as always.

since it's first fire up, it's been getting hot fairly quickly, vac advance wasn't connected so assume that was it. Connected up to full manifold vacuum and while its slowed it down its still getting up to 200+ fairly quick and that's with the fans going full chat. Idles set up for highest vacuum reading, needs a power valve swap down to No5 that should clean up the plugs a little. Measuring with an infrared temp gauge, there's very little temp drop across the rad. I've had the stat out and tested fine and put a 21lb rad cap on but I'm thinking it's airlocked somewhere. I was a little concerned it had the wrong water pump as the engines a 95-99 crate ZZ4 which came with a reverse rotation water pump and serpentine belt. Reading up on the motor the web's saying it's just the pump direction is different, the actual coolant flow is as per normal SBC so any pump will work in either rotation. Next time I run it up, I'll run it up to temp with the rad cap off and check I'm getting flow.

Once I'm satisfied it all works together, I'll be pulling the motor back out. It's difficult to shift gears and having confirmed the clutch is fully releasing, it points to misaligned bellhousing / binding pilot keeping the input shaft turning. I'll use this as an opportunity to paint the engine bay and properly wrap the loom.

If it has a reverse rotation pump it has to run backwards as the impeller blades are designed to work that way. You'll need the normal rotation pump if that's what your pulleys are set up to do.

    Neil.
it's a normal pump being driven clockwise off the crank so should be fine, must be an airlock or something.

Has the engine been run since it was built? If not maybe the head gaskets are back to front. Pretty sure the waterways are tiny one end and bigger the other so get fitted only one way. Just a thought.

Progress got even slower on the Capri. Was at my sons sports day, and I get a call from my mother in law who can only be described as thick as pig ****. She's parked on my drive, can't get her handbrake off, asked a neighbour of mine to help, who promptly leaned into her car, released the handbrake and let her Micro roll down the drive into my Capri. IT toppled it off the axle stands, had no front ends on it, s it landed on the sump. It's split the sump and dumped 6ltrs of oil on my drive. First day I've taken off work in 6 months and I'm called away from my sons sports day to this **** and spend the next 4 hours cleaning up oil. I was ****ing livid. This is how I found it.

once I got it up on stands, the actual damage was minimal. Cracked sump, front panel a little bent and a ding in the bumper but it's set me back more in time than money..

I wasn't happy trying to sort the sump and oil pick up with it in the car, plus it'd eventually need to come out to correct the bellhousing alignment, so we took the engine and box out. While it's out, I'll check the cam's broken in and not done any of the lifters, align the bellhousing, shim the starter, new dipstick tube, paint bellhousing and box and I'll paint the engine bay for good measure

Massively ****ed off with the whole thing now, have little to no time between now and the end of July, so bang goes any chance of getting this on the road this summer.
