quote: And found the wheels rubbed on the arches, so made some raising blocks which I'll fit when I get longer U bolts

is the axle mounted over or under the leaf springs?if its over the leaves the blocks will lower the car.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

Kapri; yes, those shifters are rare, but this one was a bargain price so I figured even if it didn't work on my car I could sell it on and make a profit anyway

mygasser and vin, the axle is under the leafs

    thanks for the comments chaps

I thought I'd update since it has been yonks since my last post on this thread and I have achieved quite a lot in that space of time (I hope). I took it to the hot rod drags in September and the Smeatharpe drags in Devon in November, and my best time is a 15.9 @ 80mph. I was pretty pleased with how the car did but the gearbox was still not behaving right.

It was slipping the rear band, which I eventually found was not helped by the shortened dipstick (cough cough...which I made ) being too long so the fluid was actually filled too low. The kickdown cable I think was too slack as well, so I have read up on how to set it up correctly.
Anyway, over the past few months I have:
    • Changed the gearbox
    • Replaced the sluggish starter motor for a newer disco one which now turns the engine over much faster . Along with this I have re-routed wire to use the solenoid on the starter instead of the bulkhead mounted one.
    • Cleaned and painted the engine
    • Fitted a tach and shift light
    • Replaced the knackered bush on the gearbox mount
    • Fitted a towing eye to help with loading and off loading the car off the trailer
    • Replaced the rear single leaf springs for some stiffer van multi-leaf ones

Plus other things too small to mention or which I have forgotten about.

    I had to make some spacers because for some reason the 'stock' replacement bush was narrower;

Now my current problem is that the car leans to the drivers side. I have measured and the body is straight and level on the chassis, so the floor isn't ****ed or anything; the tyre diameters are the same; rear leaf spring mounting points are stock and the same on both sides.
Here's an older shot of the rear end to show you the angle of the shocks and leaf spring location, although now I have adjustable Gaz shocks in place of these blue jobbies:

And these are the new multileaf springs (top) against the old ones. Waiting on new U bolts because these springs are thicker with the extra leafs and I have run out of thread on the existing U bolts

Now I am thinking that the angle of the shocks are not helping, being 30* from vertical where on the HAMB I read it should not exceed over 20*. But would that alone really cause it too lean?
It Could also be the front shocks being too soft, or a combination of both of these things.

I really need to get this leaning sorted next because it looks kack ATM and I don't want to take it to any more events until I have sussed it, so any guidance and education is most welcome.

Be nice to have the front rims painted/powdercoated sometime this year, I am thinking gloss black with chrome hubcaps??

After doing a RWYB at Shakespeare County last month I found that the throttle pedal wasn't opening the butterflies all the way. I wasn't happy with the whole pedal assembly anyway, it was far too flimsy. So I decided I would remake it with a longer lever so the butterflies got WOT, and beef it up a bit in the process.

    So out with the old

    ...and in with the new

I also got round to re-priming the body this weekend; it was looking a bit tatty (or is that ratty ) so I took the plunge and tried my hand at spraying for the first time

First flatted back the old primer and etched where it had rubbed through to bare metal

    Then some more grey

Decided against having black rims and instead chose to have the wheels the same colour as the body.

So again out with the spray gun; etch followed by grey primer

Lets hope the weather holds come the Nostalgias...
