    Chassis

    Next part chassis..

Wheelbase is based on stock model A with an added 1/2 to allow for the fact that I have flush fitted the doors.

Its a fairly plain box section construction. Started by making 2 paralell rails as identical as possible.

I'm confident enough with quality of my welding, but have added fish plates to break it up a bit, and add some character.
Added recess to fish plates, I'm going to try and keep this as a little design feature thoughout build, so it all kinds of ties together.

Various cross members made by cutting box section up along its lengths to leave radiused pieces, and then curving it to desired shape, finally adding in new side plates. I find that this gives a more uniform finish than pie cutting, and also seems to get less distortion.

4 bar brackets cut out of some scrap plate and then recessed on mill.

A while ago I was given an old trailer. The wheels from which I've used on another project. The frame from this is pretty heavy duty so I've turned it into a mobile chassis table.

Then just a case of tacking rails to table, squaring everything up with tape measure and string, then welding it all up.

    Cheers Gav.

Cheers. I contemplated selling it a while ago, but now glad I didn't.

    Bodywork

Dropped body on chassis to check it all matched up, (having spent a considerable amount of time checking and rechecking measurements) I'm glad to say they both seem to fit together ok.

Having done this, I made a start on the body. Not made things easy for myself by making up a body from scrap panels. On top of this: doing bodywork is my least favourite part of building.

Started with firewall recess and trans tunnel.

Biggest issues are missing parts of rear quarters and rotten lower part of rear panel.

I made a small wheeling machine from an old vulcanising clamp. Works reasonably well, although I think the lower roller maybe needs more of a crown on it. Top wheel runs on a couple of old bearings from a scrap lawnmower, however lower roller has just a plain ID, running steel to steel on 16mm bolt.
I'll probably end up make a new frame from scratch,(with a larger throat), and upgrading the lower roller, particularly as this machine isn't large enough to make the repair piece for rear panel.

    Gav.

I'm impressed with the english wheel as much as the metalwork you do with it.
