    project lock down

something a bit different for you,
as i am in lock down and the garage is to far away and being bored out of me tree i have decided its time to start something just to pass a bit of time.
had an old mountain bike in the shed so i thought i would turn it into a project and my new mode of transport. its a maxima mountain bike i got about 12 years ago.
    heres the plan,
not going to use it off road so i have put on some road cut slick tyres,
    bit of painting,
and convert the cable operated disc brakes to hydrlic and then once we get back to work im going to use it every day as im probably going to need a bit off exercise after sitting on me arse for a few weeks.

Hydraulic brakes, having been over the handle bars a few times as a kid, are you sure they won’t be to “grabby” ?

    yeah,
i have adjusted the current set up a few times and after using just a few times they dont work but i believe the hydrolic units are adjustable for feel so it will be interesting to see how i get on with them.

Yep hydros all the way, so much more control.
If it’s not going to see the dirt again I’d replace the rear shock with a bit of box to stop bobbing when peddling and lock off the forks if you can, insert bit of rod if you can’t, The tyres will give you all the suspension you need and won’t you want more than 40/45 psi in the tyres, no matter what it says on the side of the tyre.
This is what I’ve been doing my daily exercise on, now I’m furloughed, it’s got hydros, fatish tyres at 40psi and rides like you’re on carpet, even when I take it on the single track around here.

Looks like a fun thing to play with.

    spot on chaley.

i have adjusted up the front forks and the same thing with the rear shock and that stops it as you say bobbing when you pedal and i have 60 psi in the tyres . you wont believe how much fastter it is on the road now.
    yours looks alot of fun.

right finally got some bits to work with. i am still waiting for the brakes to arrive but the paint came for the handle bars so that was todays mission.
for some reason the handle bars were pretty rusty so i decided if i had to paint them i would do them red.
took all the rust and paint of and gave them a quick coat of premier.

coat of red job done. tomorrows job is to put it all back together and im hoping the brakes arrive so i can sort them as well.

good job handlebars are clamped in mostly these days like yours are. that lovely red paint wouldn't do well being wiggled through an old style 1 bolt clamp that pushbikes used to use when i was a kid.
    neil.
need a job done on your project? i may be able to help.

parts were all nice and dry this morning and as luck would have it the brake kit turned up. so it was a case of fitting the freshly painted parts and fitting the new brakes.

with the bars back on with the new brake levers it all looks all fine and dandy.

and with the brake calipers on its done, even though its not had alot done to it it looks way better.

out for a spin and the brakes are like night and day, there way better. with at least another week before work opens up again its going to get plenty of use.
