maibe you can put a diesel back in it sumting like a mercedes inline 5 or 6 , those engines are aluminium and can be polished , the engines themselves dont cost the world and the polishing just takes a lot of time and elbow grease

Yes folks, you are right of course.
Thank you all for the encouragement.
I re- used my cam and followers from the 400 in this engine, surely as they were long broken in they shouldn't have eaten away.
For now, I'm gonna concentrate on finishing my garage work (see other thread), as stripped down engines and cement dust don't really compliment each other.
Once the garage is done it should give me room to remove and strip the engine properly, to get to the bottom of the problem.
I may live in East London, I may have a number plate that reads "Chopt", but I do NOT use 6" wheel spacers!

if it isnt a roller cam but a flat tappet cam its hit or miss , if you installed it using lots and lots of molly lube they can last or they eat themsilves in no time flat
you will see it fast enough if you pull the tappets out or measure the lift on each rocker

So today I actually got to do some work on the truck - at last!
Cam and followers are ok, the metal has come from bearings.
So plan is to take crank to engineering firm for a check and regrind if needed.
At the Supernats there was a guy called Simon who was rebuilding a SBC right there, he was very knowledgable and helpful.
One thing I learned - if re using a cam, as well as keeping followers in same place, you also need to use the same springs again, apparently going to tougher springs will wipe out your cam.

it was so nice to work in the new garage, room to move, could use engine hoist and engine stand without having to work through open door.
And so clean! But now i keep tidying up and cleaning up after each job!!
