    ‘Lost’ Logbook on Potential Purchase

    Hi All,

I’m still looking at various kit cars..quite a few where the logbook have been ‘misplaced’.

I’m more than a little wary but some good deals out there!

So....what is involved in applying for a new logbook?
Do I need to send pictures or any other paperwork to DVLA along with the forms?
Has anyone been through the process?

    Thanks for reading.

you need the chassis number and the reg number, and £25 for the DVLA, if everything is ok you should get a V5c

...and if it isn't OK because someone is already using the book elsewhere then you are opening a can of worms. Whoever has a PROVABLE right to the book ie THE CAR will get the book and the other will be sent for BIVA. That's what happens when people decide to play fast and lose with paerwork whilst looking to maximise their financial return.

There's avery good reason DVLA recommend NOT buying a vehicle without a current V5C.

Ask yourself why it's been 'lost'

I've probably had getting on for 50 motors over the past 35 years and never managed to loose a logbook yet...

It's a very good point. Giving a huge benefit of the doubt, I suspect that some of these 'barn find' vehicles have been dragged out of council lock ups when they're on the point of being demolished for housing and the owner can't be traced. Presumably, the owner has either died or not paid any rent for years. It's all pretty dodgy though. Why doesn't the vendor get the duplicate V5C?

    I'd steer well clear.

I bought a scooter once of someone I worked with.had it for years and was using it,but couldn't find the v5 when I bought it.

Turned out it wasn't even on DVLA,s system.
