Don't forget that if you want to do a rebody correctly you actually need photos of the donor car ( with plate ) and the stripped chassis ( with plate ).

I don't know if your laws are the same, but here if you don't have a title (log book) that's in your name, the car is not yours to sell, and a buyer won't be able to get the title transferred.
Only the registered owner can get a replacement title.

over here, if you apply for a log book for a car you have bought without one, the DVLA will contact the currently registered keeper and ask them if they did sell the car to you, and if you agree, they will issue the book to the new keeper.

(If the car reg is no longer o the DVLA system) Even if you have a car with plates, chassis numbers, engine number, this isn't sufficient proof that they all belong together. You need more. Old MOT, tax disks.
I have a 31 Austin that's obviously on the right plates (mechanically you can tell they've been with the car for that long!) I have chassis and engine numbers, but dvla won't issue a new log book for the original reg.

yep, it's all standard. Problem is that without an old log book (and without it going on to the dvla computer system) you need to prove entitlement to the actual reg number.
It's been hidden away for at least 40 years so the reg doesn't show up on DVLA check any more.
DVLA needed more, Vintage Austin club couldn't provide any further proof. Sure I could get an age related once it's running (in standard form) but not worth it as it'll be radically altered and need to go on a Q anyway.

If a reg doesn't show up on a check on the DVLA website (do an MOT history check) then the reg hasn't been transferred to the new system.
You'll then need some proof. Old MOTs, Tax discs, Old log book, even historic pics, would all go a long way to getting the reg back- if it hasn't been re-allocated.

Never happen here. It would mean the DMV would have to do some work
