    I had the random photo request on a 123e a few years ago, they wanted Vin, engine number, rear axle and the crossmember behind the gearbox, which I had trimmed a bit, but they still sent the book.

    as far as i know you can legally reshell a car. at least you could a few years back when we did a bit of salvage repairs.

    Yes, it's legal to reshell using a NEW shell but DVLA must be notified and they'll issue a suitably annotated logbook. Shell must be from OEM or OEM approved reproduction.
