    Transferring car ownership

This is probably very straightforward but is a new one to me.

I have always had a company vehicle, but we also always had a second car for my wife to use if I was away with work and to use at weekends if needed. As my wife walks to work this second car was hardly used averaging only 1,000 miles a year. The car was always registered and insured in my name with my wife as a named driver.

I now no longer have a company car and now have two cars in my name, I want to put one of them in my wife's name so that we both own a car each. All straightforward when selling a car to someone else or trading it in, but I don't know how to do the tax bit so that it is "seamless"?

I can fill in the log-book/V5 and send off the change of keeper and sort the insurance out, but when do I need to change the tax? Does it become null and void when the DVLA issue the new V5 in my wife's name? When am I best to change it so I don't lose too much money on the tax? We pay the tax by monthly direct debit, can I continue to do this from my account or does that need to be transferred to my wife's account. As I'm paying the tax monthly, there isn't really anything for me to "cash in" for a refund, is there?

I'm sure I am over-thinking all of this but I've never had to do it this way before.

    Thanks

Change of ownership triggers invaslidating tax so you will lose the current month .

Best to do it on last working day of the month and declare SORN .

SORN comes into effect on the first day of the next month .

Cancel your online payment and then on first day of next month transfer into wifes name and reset up direct debit.

Can be paid from any account as long a sthey get their pound of flesh.

If you do the changes online on the last day of the month you should be able to stop the DD and start a new one in the new name from the next day? If you did it in the middle of the month you'd loose the whole month in current tax and have to back-date the new tax to the start of the month - you would loose one month's tax. BTW I have never paid road tax by DD so don't know if it can be set up that quickly? If not, you might have to tax it for six months as a one-off payment?

Great, thanks. It's funny how simple things that most folks do without even thinking seem complex when you've never had to do it before!

Just keep it in your name , my wife’s car is in my name so if we get divorced she will have to take the bus.
Or do as Kev says .

yes, i've done it online the night before the 1st of the month a few times now. i always pay it dd now, it's so easy and you can cancel it easily too. i do the v5c online too if i buy/sell a car, the new one comes in less than a week too.

Once you are used to paying by DD it won't really notice when the road tolling charges are added

i thought the road tax was just that kev, a tax to pay for the roads
not everyone agrees but i've said for years they should put the 'road' tax on fuel so the more you drive the more you pay. but i guess that's way too fair to people who don't drive and damage the roads much so wouldn't do at all.
    neil.

That hasn't been the case for many years (and the various governments have admitted it) it used to be called "The Road Fund Licence" and then it was to pay for road upkeep, but was changed to "Vehicle Exise Duty" and now it is just a tax on cars...
