    Ok sorted it now. I don't really have the tooling for this job but a local engineering shop are doing them for 120 including the welding so not a bad price. They have done them before as well.

    I would expect there to be centres in each end of the shaft, if there are, all you need is a running centre in the tail stock and a centre in the chuck(you may have to turn one up to suit) and some form of drive carrier so that the workpiece revolves with the chuck.
    Look up "turning between centres" on google images and you'll see what I mean. HTH

    Thanks chaps. Think I'll go with the sleeving method then. What's the best way to hold the shaft in the lathe as only have a 3 jaw chuck?

    Sounds fine.i do them like that.i do machine the shaft down first,then press the sleeve over the top and dowl as well

    Best way is to locate the complete shaft in a lathe,
    Lightly turn the shaft down near the end to be narrowed,
    Cut the shaft leaving about an inch of the turned area,
    Hold this bit in the lathe chuck and bore the knuckle out to the same diameter as the turned part of the shaft,
    Fit the turned part of the shaft into the bored out uj knuckle and weld both sides,
    Job done.

    Best method of shortening Jag IRS drive shafts?

    Im in the process of shortening my Jag axle by 4" a side. Have done the lower arms by cutting and sleeving inside then welding back together but a bit unsure the safest way to do the drive shafts. I am thinking of cutting them and using a sleeve on the outside with dowl pins through the middle for good measure. Even if the weld was to fail the shaft would still be held together by the sleeve and the weight pushing against it. Does this sound ok?
