    Refurbish steering wheels

Have just got myself an old Morris 8 steering wheel the problem with it is that the rubberised coating is loose/powdery and every time you hold it i get black hands, not wanting to wash my hands every time i drive the car, has any one any idea how to stabalise the coating. I have thought about varnish/PVA glue rubbed in to the wheel etc then painting, anyone got any ideas? Last resort will be to bind the rim with string as per the older race cars.
    Thanks for ideas
    Mark
