why not have the mk1 shafts resplined. I know a guy who resplined ford 9" shafts. would be lot stronger than cutting and welding.

Ok thanks for that. What motor and trans are you using? Cheers

The mk3 Diff does bolt in as I have done it myself but halfshafts are totally different. I ended cutting and shutting the half shafts using mk3 inners with mk1 inners which worked ok and made the gearing much better

As Kapri says you can't fit the MK3 engine to a MK 1 but You can fit a MK3 engine to a MK 2, so maybe you can use MK2 belhousing on Mk1 box? Or fit a mk2 box to a MK1 car (they are both 3 speed) I know that thereis a starter motor issue but you can get round it by using nuts and bolts instead of bolting into the casing (I can't remember exactly what we did as it was forty years ago)

As far as the diff is cncerned, I think the diff fits in the MK 1 casing (it fits in the MK2) but the half shafts have different splines.

I would have thought that you Kiwis have more info and better parts availiability than we do in the UK!

Nope, Mk 2 and 3 engines WON'T fit the Mk 1 trans, major problems with flywheel size and starter motor from memory.

Easy way to more power is a 4 branch manifold as the walking stick severely restricts the breathing. Then modify the inlet to take a twin choke weber , don't used an adapter as you then are still trying to get the mixture though the same hole.

I've no hands on with a Mk 1 axle but hopefully Pigsy will be along soon to tell you .

MK 1 Zephyr with MK3 Diff

Hi, I am considering putting a MK3 Engine in my MK1, along with a Mk3 Diff. Can I use the original trans and do I need to change the axles? Someone said to put shortened MK2 Axles in but I don't know why I cant just use the whole MK3 Diff? Any help would be great. Also what engine work to do to the MK3 motor to get max HP and torque but still be reliable. Cheers
