    no it's so if you have a leak somewhere you still have 'some' brakes

    Call me dumb but isn't the point of using a dual circuit mc so to get the correct amount of fluid going to all the right places?

    If the MC is mounted below the floor it may also be lower than the wheel cylinders. When the brakes are not in use the fluid will travel back to the MC if you haven't got residual valves. You will then have to pump the brakes to 'charge' the wheel cylinders.
    By fitting residual vales, the valves keep the wheel cylinders 'charged' with fluid and stop the fluid draining back to the MC so as not pump the brakes each time.
    I don't think they are needed if the MC is mounted on the firewall.
    Its also worth fitting a proportioning vale to the rear line to control the brake split/ballance.

    Only if the master cylinder is lower than any of the calipers or wheel cylinders.

    Whether you need a proportioning valve or not depends on whether the master cylinder was designed for the relative displacement of fluid front/rear. But what you will need is a residual pressure valve for the rear otherwise there will be too much travel in the wheel cylinder pistons.

    Proportioning valve

    I'm getting ready to get the brakes all sorted on the panel van and my mate Tom was banging on about how I need a proportioning alive for the rear.
    I have drums on the rear and discs up front. Can someone explain why I need such a valve if my master cylinder is for disc/drum anyway?
