My Zodiac has dip on the outside pair and when on full beam all four lights light up and the outside pair still has the dip beam as well. I would have thought that Capri were wired the same.
I don't think the headlights are wired though a relay but the main beam flash is, this only lights up the high beam on all four lights.

i think all the old stuff with twin filament headlights only ever lit one filament at a time

Wouldn't the way it works be down to the switch itself? Either way you should have two relays or something like the double one that trevd linked to, although I don't think I'd want that one.

Rosco, do you have twin headlamps or single?
Could be a US only thing. I just pulled up a wiring diagram for a 78 Capri and it shows only 1 relay that powers either the dip or the main but not both at the same time. No idea why they are different but we have some weird rules and regulations for 'foreign' cars.

Rosco, you'll need two relays if you want both beams on at the same time.
Forget that as you'll need two relays anyway.
