    The fishy smell is overheating of the cable connection into the switch or appliance . Once this happens you need to cut back the wire to a nice clean unheated part of the cable , and then replace the switch or appliance connection terminal block or complete appliance as well .Once its overheated it will never have a good electrical continuity again .
    Probably wire connections never tightened properly in the initial install.

    we used to get a fishy smell whenever hall light was on, turned out to be bulb holder changed that never had it since.

    Earth connection won't cause the smell. It does need to be in though for your safety. have you had a new shower fitted recently? If its too many Kw it will overheat the cable feeding the shower.

    Turned electric off and took switch off wall to have a look,There was 1 earth wire out of the hole.Could this cause anything,Any put it back and checked the other connection and all tight

    I was at my parents villa in Spain and could smell that fishy smell, took me ages to work it out eventually found it to be the light fitting on ceiling had a ceramic type lamp shade holding each bulb. Bulb was to high wattage started burning shade material.
    Smell was awful.
