Mates PA was exactly the same would sit and idle and not overheat but attempt to drive it round the block and it would immediately boil= stuffed rad.(17 years in radiator trade ) .
Are the temp senders in the same place? if they are you mght have an air lock and they are in steam rather than water. Might be worth trying to bleed the system at various high points to be sure.
Thats a good point. I can't see how the car is 'boiling' having only driven a few hundred yards ish but, I used the original gauge and an after market one and they both read the same. Good point though.
maybe the gauge is telling porkies?
Thanks folks. By the way, I went for a bit of a drive and when I came back I checked for cold areas on the radiator and it felt the same in all the areas I touched, in other words, no cold spots, just the same heatness (my own made up word) in all the areas. Just wondering if this means anything?
Local guy to me recored my rad for £120, so I'd shop around.

/\ That's about bleeding air bubbles from the system.
When I changed the thermostat in my PC Cresta the old one had a hole in the flange. When I got a new one it did not have a hole and the guy at the Factors where I got it from was a classic car guy and he advised me to put a same size hole in the new one as without one it can cause problems.
