Well I was pretty close LOL
A box of rocks would know it was nothing in the engine, unless it had some fancy self tightening rods bolts so the knock went away when it was revved up LOL

    hi
had this before on a capri
the top of the piston has broken off just under the piston rings
    so you still have compression
and at idle rattles in the bore
when under power the piston top stays on top of the broken piston so no rattle
    hope that helps

Its an auto trans, I have checked the torque converter bolts so its not that.
I will drop the sump and check the rod bolts
Tried the screwdriver method and the sound is everywhere!

I've had a noise very similar to that on a Triumph six pot and it was the top of a valve guide broken off and then sliding up and down the valve stem hitting the head and valve spring retaining cap in turn.

My own 2 cents worth would be it's not a big end, it just doesn't sound like that sort of bottom end noise to me. Whatever, I think I'd wanting to be having a look sooner rather than later.

i've heard that noise before and it sounds like a rod bolt has come undone or broken. the cap will soon part from the rod which will then make it's way where it shouldn't, usually out through the sump or into the water jacket.
    hope i'm wrong but.......
    neil.

It's either very simple or with that noise it's fubared so will need a rebuild anyway
