Dont forget to re lube the cam n lifters if theyre new Mark,the moly has probably worn off with all the turning of the engine
It's exactly one and a half teeth out!! This works out to be 15 deg on the cam, which is 30 deg on the crank, exactly as you worked out with the degree wheel!!
I got a new key and blimey, it's bloody tight......... You had mentioned this as a problem so I hope I have the problems covered even if it needs aa bit of tweaking and tuning!!

Just had a bit of a surf through here and saw this thread again. I did say that i have known them gear drives to be marked up wrong or even have no marks at all. And when i put the dial indicator and degree wheel on there it seemed like it was valve opening @ 4 degrees BTDC which is about 28 too late (or about a tooth and a half). There were also the issues with the gears themselves being as slack as a whores draws and mangled keyways and woodruff keys making it almost immpossible to get it in perfect alignment. That was gonna be a suggestion and I may have even said it at one point I cant remember now, but to fit a true roller set and get the cam timing 100% and then fit the gear drive back in once its good to go.
Spencer mentioned you had rebuilt the carb and had something wrong, did you sort it out?

Im not happy with claims made by certain camshaft manufacturers so an easy gauge of valve timing accuracy is to fit the parts with the correct information supplied and check the accuracy of the advertised information. On a cam spec card you will see the degree of intake opening point,to check the accuracy and valve timing you simply connect a dti gauge to number 1 inlet rocker and read when the valve is on the point of opening,then connect a degree wheel to the crank pulley and measure the BTDC degree point, not only does it allow you to check the timing is correct but it also it allows you know how much the manufacturer has lied to make you believe you have the cam spec youre looking for! There is a well known manufacturer ( no name mentioned ) who sells cams on big spec advertise duration regularly only to disappoint customers when fitted...

Those timing marks are still out Tom, which ever way you cut it!! I don't think I'll run it with the timing chain as I won't be able to stand the idea of playing with it..... again!!! AND, AND it'll need more sealer!!

Hi Mark, I hope you dont take my comment as criticism, I am not criticising , looking at your photo you seem to be a little generous with the Silicone sealer , The excess sealent can often find its way to the oil pick up strainer !!!,
I use Wurth Silicone RTV black myself and as sparingly as possible,also I find Hylomar very user friendly.
Before you sell the Chain and sprocket set , why not run the engine with it , just to be sure to be sure LOL.
By the way the timing marks (DOTS POSITION) are different on a SBC , different to say Ford BMC. I seem to remember that was mentioned way back in this thread .
This is one that was removed as it didn't start! This had the gear drive fitted.
This picture is me just trying a proper timing chain set to prove the timing marks did or didn't line up. So, it proves the timing marks on the gear set are wrong. I haven't fitted a chain in this pic as I only wanted to do the check. Now, I'll properly align the marks and get the cam into the right place, then re-fit the gear drive ready to drop the engine back in the car......... at some stage!
By the way, does anyone want to but a brand new Cloyes timing chain and gear set? Yours for £30 plus postage!
