I've used a vac dizzy with that cam in a 350. Ran full manifold vacuum and worked very well.
Howdy, i probably did ask about vacuum a while ago as have been pondering and reading up on it. Cash is tight, but I still want to get to as many shows as possible this year so the piggy bank gets it. I've read some good tech stuff re; idle / low load, which is what the engine does most the time. I got the twin point dizzy years ago without realising it works best at the track etc. I'd never thought to pull in the mechanical part to allow more initial. Currently no more than 10 initial. It doesn't like more than 34 total on premium and has knocked under heavy load. Mind, I think that would be a bit of a compromise and if the tuning guys can get more with a wider range that vac allows then so be it. Cheers Jimbo
MSD every time unless I was looking for an old school look then it's a Mallory 47 series with a petronix unit in it.
I wondered why you had no vacuum but sure you discussed it on here a while back Jim?
I'll confuse you even more. I've put a Pertronix Ignitor kit in a GM body in my W block Chevy and an MSD Pro Billet distributor in my small block. Have used a few MSD ones in the past as well. I think both are good quality. If I were in your position and buying new I would go for the MSD Pro Billet, their Streetfire is a cheaper quality. Make sure that you have good connections on everything, especially earth's, whatever you go for. The one thing I will not personally use these days is Mallory.
For maximum fuel economy you should always use vac advance distributor. At light load such as cruising on the motorway engines run more economically with maximum ignition lead.. if possible change your distributor to a vac type

It looks like Pertronix and MSD have similar modern contactless distributors that can work with 6AL and be good for proper tuning. Anyone had any experience of either?
