    Thanks chaps, the car is currently apart for a rebuild, splashed out on pistons, the block is away for a reborn (chickened out on doing it myself as the boring bar I have acquired needs restoration and there must be something missing). I have stripped the heads (again) and machined them to accept stem seals. Of course I had to make the tool for this.

    Daimler v8s ALWAYS smoke, part of its motorbike engine design heritage. On the 2.5s the hot fix used to be Marina valve stem seals , don't know about the 4.5 though worth a look.
